The best reason yet to ban AI

I just read an oped in an Ivy League undergraduate newspaper arguing that it is a matter of basic justice for the university to pay for and provide students with access to the most up-to-date AI platforms. Duke University, the oped argues, is already paying for and providing its students with this platform. If this Ivy League university not does follow the example of Duke, Duke students will have an “unfair advantage” over this university’s students. The university must make this technology available to ensure that its students are competing on a “level playing field.”

This article, I should say, may be the best reason I’ve yet found for why universities should ban AI. Until you’ve been forced to sweat your way through Rawls, and I mean really sweat your way, not have it predigested for you, not have it handed to you in the form of lecture notes from your professor or AI, until you’ve been required to read Emma, and forced to feel, in your body and your bones, what social stupidity actually looks like, from the inside and the outside, I don’t know that you can really understand, again, in your body and your bones, what justice and seeing social facts clearly entail, and why this oped is so farkakte.

I agree that the oped is nuts…but in my stetl we’d say fakakta.

I always thought it was “farkakte”, or “fahkakte” if you’re from Boston or Brooklyn.

And you shouldn’t write down what your professor said, but memorize it as he speaks. Because writing is just a crutch and degrades the memory.

Yeah, well, it’s all Greek to me!

You might not be remembering those little yellow books we used as crutches….does “Cliff’s Notes” ring a bell? The avoidance of pain became important when I bought all the textbooks for the semester, and in paperback mostly they stacked 18 inches high on my desk.

Maybe they’re playing the long game where those with even a superficial relationship with the AI will be spared the first AI culling of us sentient meat bags.
