Punishment and Purification at Columbia

My friend Alex Gourevitch alerted me to Columbia’s statement on combatting discrimination, harassment, and antisemitism, which I had somehow missed. Alex points out how it’s essentially DEI from the right—new sensitivity trainings, for what the university calls antisemitism; new diversity hiring initiatives, for pro-Israel scholars; new administrators, to oversee the hiring—with a lot more coercion.

On that question of coercion, have a read of the statement and simply count how often words like “sanction” (as in punish) and “suspension” and “expulsion” appear. It’s hard not to read this as new constitutional order for universities, in which the onerous apparatus of crime and punishment that this country has veered to over the decades is simply dropped onto the university campus.

Is this a university that believes it can resolve its conflicts and disagreements through dialogue and deliberation and education or a private government that approaches each and every question of difference through the mechanisms of inquisition, incarceration, and deportation?

To me, the answer seems clear. This is no longer an institution of education. Like the national government, Columbia has become a regime and a ritual of purification.

That the very ones who presumed to teach us how to be human, decent, tolerant—in a word, civilized—turn out to be the most abject of bootlicking cowards, and among the first in line to surrender at that. I should be surprised, but I’m not. The same thing happened in Germany under Hitler, and Russia under Stalin. I’m sure they have their reasons, such people always do. I don’t want to hear what they are—I don’t care. No matter what happens from now on, I’m done with them forever.

Don’t worry, I am certain that the professors of Humanities there, steeped as they are in the classics and thus with the knowledge of thousands of years of civilization at their fingertips, will take the humane and the long view and strike back with such ferocity that the Trump regime will cower and possibly launch missiles at some poor country just to distract from their shame

Trump is already devising plans to stay in power. Or should I say, the generals of new wealth have been directed towards that end? For them there’s nothing to lose if the tides turn, which they may in the near, but the sink hole is reaching collapse.
