The opposition party is neither in opposition nor a party

Forty Twenty [aach, basic error] percent of Americans now say that they think flying is very or somewhat unsafe, up from 12% last year. Google searches for “is it safe to fly” are way up from the norm. And Trump just fired 400 workers at the FAA.

If an opposition party can’t put these simple stats together to make a political argument about society, government, and our interdependence, it’s neither in opposition nor a party.

Update, 3:30 pm

On a related note, The Washington Post just reported this:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that it is moving to correct the accidental firing of several people working onthe federal government’s response to an outbreak of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is a low risk of the public contracting the disease, the USDA firings come as bird flu is wreaking havoc on the agriculture sector and as egg prices soar to a record high. The job cuts are part of a Trump administration overhaul of the federal government, including attempts to gut national health agencies, halt scientific reports and grants, and put a hold on multimillion-dollar programs to combat malaria, Ebola and tuberculosis abroad.

“Although several positions supporting HPAI [bird flu] were notified of their terminations over the weekend, we are working to swiftly rectify the situation and rescind those letters,” a statement from the USDAsaid.

In a Friday statement ahead of the cuts, the USDA touted its pursuit of “an aggressive plan to optimize its workforce,” and Secretary Brooke Rollins said she welcomes “DOGE’s efforts at USDA,” referring to the Elon Musk-led U.S. DOGE Service.

Again, if the fakakte Democrats can’t make a point of this, beyond some inane tweets, well, you get the idea.

All we have to do is have a front man or woman respond to everything idiotic Trump does and emphatically explain why this will hurt everyday Americans- my congressman seemed to think we’re on top of everything when I emailed him.

It’s pathetic and funny that their public demeanor has not really changed at *all* compared to a year ago, or two, as if nothing happened. And of course, from their POV, nothing did happen, at least nothing that they consider to be their fault or even responsibility. ‘We’re keeping track of what’s going on in the White House and are very concerned. Kamala ran a perfect campaign! Perfect! We are waiting to see how things play out in ballsandstrikes.”

I don’t fully understand how people can be this cynical but really, other than extortion, Dem’s only strategy has for decades been to ‘let things play out’ when things get bad, so they can step in, or at least fund raise. It’s ‘smart’, you see, to let things fall apart.

Democrats see a fundraising opportunity. In fact, that’s all they ever see. Money rocks.

It feels like there’s a long-desired showdown finally coming to a head now — between Americans habituated to (or romantic about) the extreme differences between their respective parts of the country. Say the Dakotas vs metropolitan New York or LA. Or almost anywhere versus the big coastal cities. I predict all sides will be surprised and learn some things they did not expect to love or hate about new risks assumed and standards dropped.

Those who still grow up on farms (the source of most of America’s career military officer cadres) experience radical deregulation where child labor, dismemberment, and death is pretty common. They’ve been rolling through self-amplified hardship a long time and nowadays look back on the 80s farm crisis as the last time people really pulled together. So I don’t think they’re the best people to be influencing airline safety, but I also think they may not care too much.

America’s love of disaster movies comes from its fundamentally unsettled, deranged and well-looted hellscapes. Small wonder Trump is after the national parks. Cormac McCarthy has nailed the national soul. It seems unlikely to ever sustain boring things like peace and safety without first having all the fight kicked out of it.
