Heard the Left Anchor podcast. Great stuff about the book. Look forward more than ever.

Talking about the Thomas/Hill hearings bizarre stuff also reminded me of another great Orin Hatch moment- when he deadpanned the words “Long Dong Silver”. There’s video of it somewhere. The humor is blunted a bit by the context – that Thomas was/is such a pig to Hill (and no doubt other women) however coherent his philosophy for that is.

The Orin Hatch video really is funny. I won’t sully this site with a link – it’s easy enough to find. But what I found striking about it, aside from what a puckered jackass Hatch is, is what a smooth liar Thomas is. His only ‘tell’ is reaching for the water glass. He barely blinks when he says he has no idea who broached ‘Long Dong Silver’. His hatred – as they say – is pure.

I know Corey’s project here is descriptive and that therein will lie what we can safely assume will be its great value. But I don’t mind being normative from the peanut gallery: Thomas does not seem dumb at all, as the racist-liberal rap on him has it. But he is damned creepy.

The older I get the harder it is for me to determine what dumb and smart are or mean. The MSM always stressed how “smart” Hilary Clinton is, yet I find her a woman wholly lacking in imagination or creativity. Bush was considered “dumb” but I really think it was more intellectual laziness and a total lack of curiosity. We all need much more precise language when talking about these topics. I’m guilty of calling Trump “a moron”, but that’s just my anger talking. What he is is a deeply ignorant, arrogant, and misinformed individual (bad as that it, for some reason it lacks invective punch). The words that come to mind when I think of Clarence Thomas are blinkered, doctrinaire, and resentful. Perhaps others could find a better collection of descriptors.

Re the title: A tip of the hat, I presume, to H.N. Hirsch and The Enigma of Felix Frankfurter. (P.s. Congrats on finishing it.)

Your New Yorker piece, “Clarence Thomas’s Radical Vision of Race,” was utterly fascinating. I look forward to reading the book.
