Is That All There Is?

I was a little underwhelmed by Julian Sanchez’s response to my post about his thoughts on the Cato-Koch affair.

    I’d call it a non-response.

Julian doesnt say much but what he said does make sense. The disagreement seems to go all the way to the definition of coërcion. An argument can be made for each. Yours tracks more accurately with the subjective impact of events on an individual. Certainly the stress involved in losing a job is not lessened by the belief that coërcion is not the right word for what has happened to you.

But if we allow that to be defined as coërcion, we perceive, as you perhaps do not, a very treacherous and slippery slope we will have then stepped firmly upon. Because at this point all economic arrangements would seem to become effectively permanent, and this plainly will not work well at all. I believe this is the same reason we will disagree on a formulation such as a ‘right to health care.’

I think we can all agree that we want health care as available and affordable as possible to everyone – if only because we know that this will decrease the chance of someone else getting sick and ultimately making us sick as well. But a ‘right to health care’ implies that someone else has an *obligation* to provide it for you, so that will remain a step too far for a libertarian.

Just because you don’t have an adequate response, does not make it underwhelming. How about an actual argument instead of a flippant, evidence and argument-less dismissal? That would be too much for your progressive “EVERY HUMAN PROBLEM NEEDS A GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY WITH IRON-CLAD JOB SECURITY” busy-body pea-brain to wrap itself around.

My girlfriend threatens to break up with me if I leave the toilet seat up. The emotional trauma this would cause would be great. COERCION! BOYFRIENDS OF THE WORLD UNITE, YOU HAVE NOTHING BUT CLEAN TOILET SEATS TO LOSE!

I’m glad that Julian took a much needed vacation. I’m also glad that Labor fought and won workers the right to take vacations.
